The Giant of Provence is one of the most feared climbs. The first part of the climb is through the humidity and airless forest before the barren moonscape of the upper stage.Other climbs are longer and steeper but the combination of the heat from the stone, the lack of oxygen, the sometimes strong winds make it a terrible climb.

Many of the greats have taken this stage. Charly Gaul in '58, Poulidor in '63, Merckx in 1970 and who can forget the epic battle between Lance and Marco in 2000.

Antoine Blondin, the poet laureate of the Tour wrote, "There are few happy memories of this sorcerer's cauldron. We have seen riders reduced to madness under the effects of stimulants, some coming back down the hairpins they thought they were climbing, others brandishing their pumps and accusing us of murder...falling men, tongues hanging out, selling their soul for a drop of water, a little shade".
